New Digital Work Card System

October 9, 2019 | Brazil

The Brazilian government has published an ordinance announcing a new system that will issue digital work cards, thus streamlining the process of hiring foreign nationals. The system is not yet fully in place.

The current process of applying for physical work cards by appointment has been plagued by long lines, appointment shortages and processing delays such that foreign nationals’ immigration status often expires before they can obtain a work card and start working. However, this process will remain in place until the new system is up and running.

Digital work card applicants will use a mobile application called Digital Workbook to obtain the card. All those registered in the Individual Taxpayers’ Register (CPF) will be issued cards and the digital work card number will be the CPF number. Note that digital work cards may not be used for identification purposes.
