January 10, 2020 | United States of America

USCIS formally announced a mandatory electronic registration process for cap-subject H-1B visas. Employers seeking to file H-1B petitions for the 2021 fiscal year cap must first register their potential applicants electronically and pay an associated registration fee of $10.

According to the most recent guidance, the electronic H-1B registration period will begin on March 1, 2020 and will end on March 20, 2020.  It is anticipated that the number of registrants will exceed the annual quota of 85,000 H-1B visas by March 20, 2020.  Thereafter, a computer-based lottery selection process will be conducted.  Notification of selection will be sent by March 31, 2020; and only companies with selected registrants can file H-1B petitions for cap-subject FY 2021.
